Description

Spiral galaxy NGC 2903!

Located in the constellation Leo, which is home to several other gorgeous galaxies, NGC 2903 was discovered by prolific astronomer William Herschel in 1784. At the time he listed it as a nebula since it wasn't yet know that other galaxies existed. It's located about 30 million lightyears away and is a member of the Virgo Supercluster of galaxies. It's a barred spiral galaxy, although the bar is hard to see in my image. NGC 2903 has a vigorous star formation rate around its core. It was missed by Charles Messier even though it is quite bright and easily visible in small telescopes at magnitude 8.9.
